Fly fishing in Swedish Lapland offers anglers the chance to pursue Arctic grayling and brown trout in some of Europe’s most pristine waters. Known for their spirited fights and vibrant coloring, grayling are a favorite among fly fishers, often challenging even experienced anglers with their speed and agility. Meanwhile, the wild brown trout of this region grow to impressive sizes and provide unforgettable battles in the current-rich rivers.
The region’s unique Arctic ecosystem creates optimal conditions for these species to thrive. Anglers will explore unpressured waters surrounded by unspoiled wilderness, using techniques adapted for the northern environment. Whether casting dry flies or nymphing in swift currents, you’ll find both the fishing and the scenery to be remarkable. Guided by experts who know these waters intimately, this adventure promises an unparalleled fly fishing experience beneath the midnight sun.
Northern Sweden during the summer can have variable weather. The average temperatures for the month are usually between 46-65F, but of course can get much colder or warmer.
- Fly fishing rod and reel outfit (4-6 weight fly rod, about 9ft in length should be perfect. Also a 7 or 8 wt. rod and reel setup is recommended for chasing the bigger char, trout, and Northern Pike.
- Waders, wading boots, and other personal fishing gear
- Rain jacket, fully waterproof
- Clothing – fishing and lodge variety. 1 pair of quick-drying wading pants will be useful if temperatures are warm. A warm sweater/fleece and even an insulating layer (synthetic is best as it will keep you warm if it gets wet) are essential.
- Hat, wide-brimmed, for sun and eye protection
- Polarized sunglasses
- Day pack, Fishing vest, hip-chest pack or other product to hold gear. Big enough to keep fly boxes, an extra layer, snacks and lunch.
- Lightweight small to medium sized pack (30-45L) with good carrying straps to bring on the helicopter with essentials (change of clothes, fishing gear, footwear, toiletries, etc) for the time at the cabins. Should weigh no more than 30lbs loaded (Patagonia’s black hole duffel or similar).
- A second bag with a change or two of clean clothes. This bag will stay in the van during the first part of the trip and you can keep anything you don’t need to take on the helicopter in the cabins.
- Sunscreen, SPF 20 or higher
- Insect repellant. Mosquitos can be bad and having good repellant and long sleeves/pants helps a lot. A mosquito net that you can put over a wide brimmed hat.
- Personal medical supplies and prescriptions
- Personal hygiene supplies-toothbrush, shaving kit, biodegradable soap/shampoo/conditioner etc.
- Spare corrective eyewear, glasses, or contacts
- Camera (smartphone)
- Book and other reading materials
- Sleeping bag liner (for sleeping in the cabins). Should be lightweight and quick drying like this one
- Compact binoculars (optional)
- Bandana or lightweight neck gaiter (such as a BUFF).
- Travel adapter for European voltage and configuration
- Flashlight or headlamp.
- PPE (Good quality masks, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes)
CLOTHING CHECKLIST
OUTERGARMENTS
- Waterproof rain jacket, preferable lightweight and packable. Always carry this with you! Fishing specific Goretex or similar products are best but a good rain jacket works as well.
- Layer for changing weather conditions. We recommend quick-drying synthetic or wool materials such as polyester, wool, nylon, etc. An insulated (puffy) jacket that can be worn under your shell layer is good for cold days.
- Long-sleeved, quick drying fishing shirts, pants and shorts
- Gloves and wool hat just in case
UNDERGARMENTS
- Long underwear, top and bottom, one pair. Mid-weight, quick drying is most versatile.
- A few changes of underwear (quick drying preferable)
- Sauna attire (bathing suit). Small lightweight travel towel (microfiber)
FOOTWEAR
- Wading boots (felt or rubber soled)
- Camp Shoes (A pair of Crocs or similar are great as they are light and dry quickly)
- Non-cotton socks. Smart wool or synthetic are best.
- A pair of hiking boots or sturdy day hikers or rain boots (Wellingtons) that are comfortable to hike in. Wellingtons are recommended as there is often wet grass and wet, boggy terrain that you can sink into.
FLY FISHING CHECKLIST

- 9ft rod with 8wt line and matching reel.

- Most versatile leader is 9-foot 4x.
