Discover the pinnacle of Steelhead fishing in Idaho on the iconic Clearwater River in North Central Idaho, a waterway steeped in angling heritage. Anglers Edge holds exclusive permits for nearly 30 miles of non-motorized Steelhead habitat, offering a truly unmatched fishing experience. These ocean-migrating rainbow trout, native to Idaho and the Pacific Northwest, embark on a remarkable journey from the ocean to our river each early fall, gracing us with their presence until mid-late Spring. This natural spectacle stands as one of North America’s most robust and thrilling fishing encounters.
Originating from the Pacific Ocean, these anadromous rainbow trout travel over 500 miles to reach the Clearwater River, where they spawn. Some mature in freshwater, while others in saltwater during their initial two to three years of life. Astonishingly, Steelhead can undertake multiple spawning journeys throughout their lifetime, returning time and again to their birthplace. Unlike Salmon, this unique ability characterizes their extraordinary lifecycle.
With sizes reaching up to 45″ and the agility to accelerate to 25 mph in mere seconds, Steelhead trout rank among the top five freshwater gamefish in North America. Their spirited resistance when hooked makes for an exhilarating battle, promising a memorable day of fishing!
Fly into Missoula, Montana or Spokane, Washington, but expect to drive to the small community of Kooskia, Idaho for your legendary steelhead fishing experience!
Missoula is approximately 3 hours from Kooskia, and 144 miles. Spokane is also about 3 hours away, and approximately 170 miles away. Either of these drives provide beautiful scenery!
You’ll be driving through mountain landscapes and along the river for the last stretch of the drive. Come a day or two early or stay a day later to enjoy other recreational opportunities in the area!
