Meet the angling adventure of a lifetime!

A fly fisher’s paradise, Kiritimati, better known as Christmas Island, offers unmatched opportunities for saltwater’s most coveted fly fishing species; It’s considered to be one of the world’s top destinations for saltwater flats sight fishing for Bonefish, Giant Trevally, and more!  The endless flats make for endless possibilities on this remote island nestled in between Hawaii and Fiji, within the small 33-island republic of Kiribati. Experience the most comfortable lodging on the island with private oceanside bungalows that were recently renovated and remodeled, within a strategically located 20-acre beachside paradise, where you’ll have access to all the modern amenities, along with prime surf and angling opportunities and a private lagoon area, exclusive to lodge guests. You’ll be away from the hustle and bustle of the main island and have the best and quickest access to the most desirable angling destinations, including the famed Korean Wreck.

Although most travelers come here for the Central Pacific’s older and most renowned flats fishing, the exotic location and island itself has some pretty large appeal to this bucket list fishing destination as well. Featuring a rich history, the largest coral atoll found anywhere in the world, miles and miles of white sand flats, the vibrant culture of the Gilbertese-speaking natives, birdwatching, diving, snorkeling, surfing, grappling relics tours, cultural & community tours, island tours, crab hunting, scoop net fishing, and more! You’ll be blown away by the diversity of bird life encountered on the island; With over 18 species of seabirds, you can witness birds such as Fairy Terns, Masked Boobies, Brown Noddies, Red-tailed tropic birds, Polynesian Storm Petrels, and more.

And, more importantly, is the multi-species action of fish and the huge numbers of Bonefish that you’ll catch! With the close proximity to the equator, you can fish some of the best Bonefishing and Trevally fishing in the world virtually year round, with little changes in the seasons and weather conditions.

Largely undeveloped, Kiritimati is a rustic and remote location far away from modern-day civilization and the solitude you’ll experience at Christmas Island Lodge is unlike any other lodge on the island. You’ll have the opportunity to dive deep into the friendly and open culture of the people who call Christmas Island home, you’ll experience the warm local greeting of “Mauri”, followed by a big smile, and be welcomed into their large community that prioritize values of faith and family.

Kiritimati is by far, one of the most beautiful, serene, and scenic countries, with epic flats fishing, in all of Oceania!

Christmas Island Lodge combines your desire to experience epic, diverse saltwater flat fishing with its newly-renovated facilities and comfortable atmosphere. The remodeled bungalows and suites are among Kiritimati’s finest lodgings.

Each of the 4 bungalows are constructed of coral stone and traditional exterior thatch roofs and all feature 2 private suites with single room accommodations (usually an extra charge for most lodges – Christmas Island Lodge is the only lodge on the island offering this benefit), a refrigerator, air conditioning, and an en suite bathroom with hot and cold water. The lodge’s mentality on single room accommodations is “just because you fish all day with your buddy doesn’t mean you want to share a room with them!” The rooms are simpler, but they are clean and comfortable. While these may seem like a given and basic accommodations, if you’ve ever been to Kiribati or a more undeveloped country than the United States, you’ll appreciate the luxury of having these features, in such a remote area close to the warm equator.

Prioritizing quality over quantity, the entire lodge hosts a maximum of 8 anglers to ensure the finest guides and lodge staff, private accommodations, excellent wifi connectivity, and a relaxed and intimate group atmosphere.

The sea-side property sits on an old British army base, famous for US & British nuclear testing. When Britain came back to clean up the testing sites, they built the structure of the lodge that sits there today. Full renovations on the property were recently completed and it is rated the most comfortable stay on the entire island.

The Kiribati culture is one of the most welcoming cultures you’ll have the pleasure of experiencing; Their warm welcomes are felt down to the smallest details when it comes to the level of service provided. The lodge staff will do everything in their power to ensure your trip exceeds all expectations and they pride themselves on taking care of their guests. From the incredible location within a fly cast away from the ocean to the private beachside access to the “swimming lagoon” nestled away from the major population centers on the island, you’ll feel well catered to in your private solitude oasis! The lodge has taken careful consideration to all the services and amenities.

You’ll start your stay being dropped off at your private single room bungalow, where your room will be ready for your arrival. You’ll take a few minutes to unpack and one of the guides will greet you and start working on getting the gear ready. Depending on the time of day, the tides, and how you’re feeling, you can go for an afternoon fish in the inner-lagoon, where you’ll fish for Trevally right in front of the lodge or you’ll head out into one of the backcountry lagoons.

You can also relax and swim at the beach or enjoy the cool evening breezes that blow in from the water each night, with a cold drink around the fire; All you have to do is tell the staff what you’d like and they’ll make it happen! During your stay, you’ll utilize the main power grid (which is solar) and generators for your power and wifi; As long as the sun is shining (which it often is) you’ll have power to support your various communication devices. Daily housekeeping is provided as well as a laundry service.

The cuisine you’ll experience is another highlight of the trip and part of the ambiance of your stay! All meals and beverages, along with wine, beer, and soda, are included with your adventure. With fresh food flown in from Honolulu weekly, you’ll be well catered to with a diverse menu of food, carefully crafted around culture and your taste buds.

Enjoy fresh Hawaiian coffee each morning (as early as 5:30am) as you get yourself ready for a day on the water, simpler lunches like sandwiches and salads to give you much needed calories, but leave you yearning for a tantalizing dinner that will knock your flats boots off (around 7:30 pm)!

Examples of food include a mix of local and fresh cuisine, fresh seafood caught locally on the island, fresh fruits and vegetables, steak, tuna, pacific lobster, palmera burgers, and much more! On the last night of your trip, you’ll be invited to a traditional Kiribati pig roast; All guides, staff, and their families are also welcomed to join in on this final meal, and the traditional dancing that tends to follow. Each night, you can indulge in evening cocktails and appetizers as you recount fishing stories at the open air maneaba (local gathering place), watching waves crash on the beach.

If you would like hard alcohol, this is not included and will need to be brought in.

A long time premier destination for angler’s seeking the island’s incredible bonefishing, as well as solid numbers of Giant Trevally, Blue Trevally, Golden Trevally, Triggerfish, Milkfish, several species of Reef Fish, and more, Christmas Island is home to unparalleled flats fishing and is incredibly diverse, having something to appeal to everyone. You can look forward to consistent fishing and weather year round; Being so close to the equator, this year round fishery is seemingly unaffected by weather conditions and seasons, coupled with over 150 square miles of easily wadable flats, endless oceanside coral reefs teeming with fish, and mesmerizing blue water opportunities. This area is primarily a walk n wade fishery, but there are opportunities for fishing by boat and limited deep water fishing, until the lodge gets a larger boat (in which they’ll be offering trolling for tuna experiences).

Although the fishing is year round, catering to whatever time of year fits your schedule, there are some times that are better than others! The wet season is January through June and the dry season is July through December (but actual precipitation is extremely minimal, regardless of the season). January and February are slightly busier times of year, since the local government and organizations tend to be working to produce better fishery management.

Tides have a significant impact on flats fishing and spring tides occur during full and new moon phases, which result in the most dramatic fluctuations in tidal swings. The new and full moon are some of the best times to consider booking, if you’re targeting Giant Trevally. But, neap tides are also a great time to book as well (during quarter moon phases), resulting in less of the rise and fall of the water depths, creating longer lasting conditions that are ideal for roaming the inner lagoon flats and Bonefishing. You can also time your week at the lodge to be in between the quarter moon and full or new moon phases, to get a combination of both scenarios. Temperature ranges around 85 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 75 degrees in the evening.

Christmas Island Lodge, in particular, stands out on this island for their fishing program, because of their flexibility; Because they limit the number of anglers to 8 per week, they have the ability to make sure you get to spend your day exactly how you want to.

For instance, if chasing Giant Trevally is your main goal, your trip will be tailored around that, if you want to catch as many bonefish as possible they’ll make it happen, and any other style of fishing or goals you have you can consider it done. Regardless of what your day entails, you’ll usually be spending all day on the water; Typically, you’ll be fishing from 8 am to 5 pm and guides are typically 2 anglers per guide with opportunities for private one on one guiding services, but you can also fish by yourself if you’d like. The guides will provide you with lunch and have plenty of water, sodas, and beer for you to celebrate the day.

The lodge is currently developing a new generation of fishing guides and you will see several guide trainees that are shadowing the guides and helping throughout the day.

The lodge is the best basecamp to experience all the prime locations this island has to offer, with access to the inner lagoon in under 10 minutes, fishing at the famous Korean Wreck, Huff Dam, and other backcountry lagoons within an hour, and a private launch site in London to access offshore opportunities in 45 minutes.

Experience Trevally fishing within a 5 minute walk from your bungalow as they cruise the flats or hang on the edges, greedily awaiting to attack your fly. These super charged and highly aggressive fish will leave any seasoned angler weak in the knees! The guides will always be carrying around a 12 weight rigged and ready rod, just in case an opportunity presents itself.

The best way to catch the aggressive Giant Trevally is to specifically target them, be mentally committed with your time and focus, and be prepared for long days of hunting these apex predators. You might only get one shot a day, but it will make you keep coming back for more!

There’s so much variety in the fishing options provided, that you can keep yourself stimulated with various species, other than Trevally. Be the first anglers on the island to start and leave each day within the inner lagoon, where the flats are teeming with eager and hungry Bonefish, try your hand at targeting the colorful and hard fighting Triggerfish, or hook and land a 35 pound Milkfish, which will test the knots on your backing! You can also target many other species sich as Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Sailfish, and various Reef Fish.

The Fiji Airways flight to Christmas Island leaves Tuesday mornings around noon, and is approximately a three-hour flight. When you arrive on Christmas Island (2), it will be Wednesday (around 3pm typically), since you cross the International Date Line; While on Hawaii time you’re flying Tuesday to Tuesday, on Christmas Island time you’re actually flying Wednesday to Wednesday. After clearing immigration and customs, a lodge staff member will meet you at the airport and shuttle you to the lodge (3) that’s 10 min. away (it’s the closest lodge from the airport).

Departing

On your way home from the island, you’ll be shuttled back to the airport where you’ll hop on a flight back to Honolulu. The flight back to Honolulu typically leaves at 7am on Wednesday morning (Tuesday Hawaii time). Your flight will land back in Honolulu around 11am Tuesday, crossing back over that International Date Line. From there, you can vacation Hawaii or make your way back to the mainland.

Delayed Flights and Extended Stays

If weather or mechanical issues prevent the flight from landing on Kiritimati there is the possibility that you will need to stay an additional week on the Island. This does not happen often, but it is always something to remember when booking your trip. If you are required to spend an additional week we will work with you on costs for the extended stay.
